In-Browser VPN Authentication & Access Control
Client Authentication, or the process of proving who you are – the client – to a remote computer, sees Digital IDs being used to cryptographically bind a customer, employee or partner’s identity to a unique Digital ID (typically including the name, company name and location of the Digital ID owner). The Digital ID can then be mapped to a user account and used to provide access control to network resources or web services and websites.

Websites or resources configured for Client Authentication will require you to present your Digital ID when being accessed. The browser will take care of this by sending your Digital ID, and the recipient server will then determine if you have sufficient rights to access the site. In most cases, the browser will present a list of Digital IDs present on the computer, allowing the user to select the most appropriate one. For example, for Belgian Government web services requires a PersonalSign 3 Pro from GlobalSign, but for other applications like the FDA ESG gateway, an ePKI issued PersonalSign is sufficient.
Depending on your Web browser, you might have to confirm that you want to present your Digital ID to the Web site. Usually, you will see a dialog box asking for the certificate password (this is the password for your private key). After you enter the correct password, the Web browser sends your Digital ID to the Web site. This is why it is important to guard your password. If someone knows the password for your Digital ID and has access to your computer, they could easily access your private information or impersonate you online.
